Cyprus is a large island – one of the largest in the Mediterranean – and lies just off the south coast of Turkey. Its position is somewhat of a crossroads between the continents of Africa, Asia and Europe which have given the island a very unique culture. With this culture has come a turbulent history and the island has been occupied by many different countries in the last 1000 years! Even in modern times the island hasn’t always been peaceful, although these days holiday makers can find not only security on the island but also a unique and beautiful destination that is missed out by people who decided to stay on the Turkish mainland rather than venturing out.
Recent years have marked holidays in Cyprus as a destination that’s a top choice for Brits, especially as the old ‘green line’ which used to divide the island is now open and there’s no limit on where you can travel. Being able to explore the entire island is a huge plus thanks to its varied environments, towering mountains and beautiful beaches.
Holidays in Cyprus attract younger people and families in equal measure, although they are generally split geographically into one of the many different resorts. People looking for clubbing and an active nightlife are liking to be staying near Agia Napa, while beaches such as those found at Fit Tree and Flamingo Bay are much more suited to young families. The island also has a huge water centre and go kart tracks to keep the kids occupied.
For adults there are some championship sized golf courses on the island, although if golf isn’t your thing, Cyprus also offers up plenty of historical landmarks left behind from the hundreds of years of occupation the country has endured.
The best time to take holidays in Cyprus is generally in the summer months. Although the temperature stays mild all year round, the rainy season in the winter months makes trips unadvisable.
