Getting a last minute deal has been one of the biggest things the media have centred on in the last decade, showing how savvy consumers have managed to save hundreds of pounds from holidays by grabbing a late deal and jetting off at the last minute.

And there’s good reason for that focus on last minute holidays. There’s no denying the allure of suddenly just ‘deciding’ to go on holiday when a week before all you thought you would do on your week off work was watch TV and do some gardening. Getting a late deal is great for people who love to go on holiday but hate having to spend the money to book months in advance only to then have months of waiting before they actually get to board a plane.

Getting a late deal isn’t for everyone though – if you have kids at school age you’ll find trying to grab a late deal during the summer holidays a near impossible task simply because of the sheer number of people who are trying to get away. Late deals tend to work best when the kids are back studying and the tourism industry is quieter – and more desperate to get people into hotels!

If you’ve made your mind up to look for a late deal than the most important thing is not to expect the best offer to suddenly fall on your lap. You do need to do a bit of work, research and comparison online if you expect to find a deal that’s both cheap and suited to you.

You also have to make sure you’re in the right mindset and don’t expect too much – getting a perfect price AND your perfect resort might be a little too much to ask for, and if you wait too long you could spend your time off work looking at pictures of sunny beaches and paradise resorts rather than actually travelling to one!
