For the UK tourism industry, the ‘summer’ season starts in May and ends in October. This can be a little confusing for UK holiday makers who treat the summer as the ‘English’ summer which is typically much shorter, or treat summer as whenever the kids are on holiday. Either way, there are two things that mark the summer season as different from the winter: Prices are higher, and resorts are busier. So how do you get away during the summer and still enjoy cheap summer holidays without all the crowds?
If you’ve got children, you’re limited to the months of July, August and September if you don’t want to take them out of school to get away. The UK travel industry is well aware of this and the governments strict regulations on when you can take children out of school mean that you’re pretty much trapped in high prices and usually find you’ll have a very limited choice of resorts. The way around this is to approach your cheap summer holidays exactly the opposite way to everyone else and book in advance. Booking in advance still won’t mean that you’ll be saving as much as people who don’t have to worry about the kid’s holidays, but you can still save quite a bit of cash.
If you’ve not got kids and can get away whenever you want, the best way to get cheap summer holidays is to not go in the summer holidays at all – at least, avoid those three months mentioned above. It’s easy to get into the mindset that these will be the only time of the year where the cheap, local destinations will be hot, but actually many destinations – even those as close a mainland Spain – enjoy great weather well into October, when you can find cheap summer holidays. You can save the obvious money from your flight and hotel, but you’ll find that the food and entertainment is also reduced in price in the later months of the year in order to attract more tourists.
